Why People Work Out and Why They Quit
People work out for different reasons, some last and even more don’t. Many start working out, then quit just weeks later. This brings up the question, “why do people work out and why do they quit?”
The answer is motivation. People are motivated to get fit for different reasons, some are for the right and some are for the wrong. To learn more about motivation and the “wheel” that drives people to get to the gym, continue reading.
Extrinsic Motivation
People who work out and end up quitting are the ones who have extrinsic motivation. These people depend on external motivators that surround them. They are influenced by others and what others have, like celebrities.
An extrinsic motivator may be a desire for a good body in order to get attention. But what happens to these people if they don’t get attention? They give up. They give up because they’re not doing it for themselves, rather, they’re doing it for others.
Intrinsic Motivation
People who work out and end up not quitting are the ones who have intrinsic motivation. These people are fueled by internal motivators like passion and a willingness to succeed. They have personal goals or they love what they’re doing.
An internal motivator may be a desire to lose weight in order to improve health. These people are the ones who succeed. They stay the course, even if it takes a long time, because they want to feel a kind of self-fulfillment.
So, if you plan on starting to work out, make sure you do it for the right reasons. Make sure you have intrinsic motivation. Make sure you do it for yourself!
